October Outreach: Individually Packaged Snacks

It’s hard to imagine a child in Plano without a bed to sleep in or a warm, safe place to call home. But it is a reality, and CITY House remains the only emergency shelter in Collin County currently serving homeless youth. The Barksdale PTA will be partnering with CITY House and their soon-to-open My Friend’s House, a shelter for children ages newborn to nine, over the course of the school year. We’re kicking things off with our October collection drive:

  • What’s needed: Individually packaged snacks and juice
  • Who it’s for: The CITY House and My Friend’s House children’s shelters
  • Where to bring it: The Community Outreach collection box just past the school office

Won’t you help?

For more information, please contact Shannon Couzens, Outreach Chairman, by email.

“I Elect to be Drug-Free”

The purpose of the Texas Red Ribbon Campaign is to present a unified and visible commitment to a Drug Free Texas. Members of the Texas Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition have joined together with the public schools and communities in the prevention of alcohol and drug use during this week. Barksdale will be participating with fun activities to heighten their awareness of the dangers of drug and alcohol.

Monday, Oct. 20: “Hugs, Not Drugs” - Bring your favorite stuffed animal for those all day hugs. Make sure your animal is smaller than from your fingertip to your elbow.

Tuesday, Oct. 21: “It’s Not the Clothes that Count!” - Wear plaid and stripes together. Just mix and match that outfit! We know it’s the inside of the person that matters!

Wednesday, Oct. 22: “Don’t ‘Slip’ into Drugs!” - Wear those outlandish slippers or socks to school. Be sure to bring a pair of shoes for P.E. and recess.

Thursday, Oct. 23: “We May Be Crazy, But We Don’t Do Drugs!” - Get the gel or hair paint ready for that crazy hair style and join us at the Red Ribbon Rally at 7:15 a.m The Shops at Willow Bend (the Macy’s parking lot facing the Sockwell center). Be sure to wear red !!!!

Friday, Oct. 24: “Be on Our Drug-Free Team!” - Wear your favorite team jersey or your Barksdale spirit wear.

PTA General Meeting: October 2 @ 7:00 p.m.

Howdy Bronco Parents!

Just a reminder that Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m., we will be having a special PTA meeting for all our parents. You will have an opportunity to see how your Bronco students are learning to be kind and help others. We will introduce you to our Outreach partners at My Friend’s House and hear about the great things they are doing in our community. We will also hear about the fantastic work done by the Plano ISD Foundation and how you can help. Most importantly, you will have the opportunity to preview the Experience the Awareness program your children will see on Friday. This is a very thought-provoking exercise for your children and you will want to see it for yourself!
